Nylon rod is a generic designation for a family of synthetic polymers known generically as polyamides, first produced on February 28, 1935, by Wallace Carothers at DuPont's research facility at the DuPont Experimental Station. Nylon is one of the most commonly used polymers. Nylon rod is difficult to get the proportions exactly correct, and deviations can lead to chain termination at molecular weights less than a desirable 10,000 daltons (u). To overcome this problem, a crystalline, solid "nylon salt" can be formed at room temperature, using an exact 1:1 ratio of the acid and the base to neutralize each other. Heated to 285 °C (545 °F), the salt reacts to form nylon polymer. Above 20,000 daltons, it is impossible to spin the chains into yarn, so to combat this, some acetic acid is added to react with a free amine end group during polymer elongation to limit the molecular weight. In practice, and especially for 6,6, the monomers are often combined in a water solution. The water used to make the solution is evaporated under controlled conditions, and the increasing concentration of "salt" is polymerized to the final molecular weight.

♦ Nylon Rod is an excellent engineering plastic that is probably one of the most famous and popular materials that since its invention has proven its credentials as the number one all round plastic in engineering. Over the years  has kept evolving with requirements and advances to keep ahead of other materials.

♦ Typical Uses: Because of its inherent properties, Nylon Rod as an engineering plastic seems to be everywhere and able to perform a seemingly limitless list of tasks. It is used for bearings, bushes, pulleys, wheels, rollers, wear guides etc. Nylon Rods is found in most modern machinery that requires moving parts to have a smooth, long lasting and trouble free performance. Nylon is found in heavy industry and manufacturing industry to help with high load bearings and material transfer. One key use for Nylon is for the manufacture of gears, it is easy to machine and an excellent resistance to wear but another important advantage of Nylon over other materials is that it will reduce gear noise dramatically and absorb shock and vibration, many modern cars use Nylon gears within their power steering systems.

Another popular use for Nylon is Nylon pulleys, this is because Nylon can withstand high pressure over its surface and provide a quick and economical pulley that will last much longer than other materials and Nylon will also cause little damage to mating parts.

♦ Temperature Ranges: Nylon Rod has a working temperature range that starts as low as -30°C up to a maximum temperature of 100°C. This is for when the Nylon is being expected to resist on a constant basis, if the Nylon is only being used at higher temperatures on a short term basis, the Nylon can withstand as high as 180°C, but remember this is for Nylon being used for short time periods.
